Gymnastics is a very physically demanding sport for both men and women. There are three disciplines available at the Olympic level: artistic, rhythmic, and trampoline. Medals are awarded to teams and individuals. Individual medals are awarded for all-around skill as well as individual events.
In artistic gymnastics, men compete in six events: parallel bars, horizontal bar, floor excercises, pommel horse, rings, and vault. Women participate in vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercises. Rhythmic gymnastics is women's only and is a choreographed combination of gymnastics and dance set to music and has the use of a hand apparatus like a ribbon or ball.
