Roman Developments in the Sciences

The Romans, as well as conquering a large portion of the world, made many developments to the arts and sciences. They also were instrumental in developing many inventions that are practical things we use today. One of the earliest and most important was the scientific and mathematical development of the arch. The arch enabled the Romans to build bridges and aqueducts that would last for a very long time. These were also used to build buildings and triumphal arches for soldiers after a war. The arch was developed using stones stacked on top of one another. This allows the arch to be self-supportive and to distribute the weight of the object it is supporting evenly.
