The ruby-throated humming bird can be identified by the red throat, cleft tail, white underparts with fluff flanks, lack of red in tail, green head, and the medium straight bill.

This is the only humming bird seen throughout the entire eastern United States. During the winter, these birds migrate to Central America where it is warmer.
